What happens at the fulfillment center: picking, packing, and shipping

Looking for pick and ship services is something few merchants want to have to spend an undue amount of time and effort on. Yes, it’s of course important that these things are done correctly, but it’s not the reason most sellers got into the industry in the first place. After all, if you wanted to do the whole full service 3PL thing, you’d be working for one of the many pick and pack fulfillment services and not running your own ecommerce outlet, right? Even still, this is an incredibly important stage in the fulfillment process that makes sure the correct product gets to your customer in one piece. So it’s definitely worth having some base knowledge. So what is pick and pack? Read on for a basic overview of the pick pack ship process flow.

What is pick packing? Picking pack? Am I getting it right?

It’s pick pack and ship, but close enough. Pick pack and ship services operate out of the warehouse where your merchandise is being held. Workers go to the bins containing your products and select a certain amount according to either the order sheets they receive from a printer or their PDAs. From there, they package the orders using a properly-sized box and an acceptable amount of dunnage, print a shipping label, and send the packages off to be delivered. In only a short amount of time, the items arrive safe and sound at your customer’s door, all thanks to the efforts of your fulfillment team. Efficient 3PL services make for satisfied repeat customers.

Do you have to hire outside help?

Small business owners often do everything themselves, from product design to fulfillment to shipping. If you have all your merchandise in your garage or in a dedicated office, it’s easy to have everything close at hand to package and ship out your items without any outside help. There often comes a time, however, when the volume of orders and customer demand becomes too much to keep up with. Merchants might find themselves spending so much time fulfilling orders they don’t have time for customer service, developing new products, or even taking some much-needed time for themselves. In this case, outsourcing to a 3PL company can make all the difference while costing only a small percentage of overall revenue. This small cost is often quickly offset by the growth you can sustain now that you don’t have to exhaust yourself doing everything alone.

Okay, you’ve convinced me. How do you find a pick and pack company?

Even a few years ago it might have been necessary to spend long hours researching businesses. After creating a short list, you would have to manually call for quotes, spend long hours on the phone trying not to be upsold for services you don’t need, and fill out complicated forms that would take days or even weeks to process.
